Now, I don’t know exactly how long the application lock has been in place, but I think it’s probably been for a couple of days. So if you’re on Apple’s official app store, I don’t even know if you’re aware of the existence of these applications.

That’s why it was so disturbing to see the latest security update for the OS X Lion application store, but it’s probably a good thing that it took so long to get shut down.
The problem Apple has is that they have the monopoly on the OS X apps market. Even if they were to start selling apps on their own platform, there still would be a huge shortage in the Mac App Store. Apple is the only company that can get away with selling the OS X apps, and without them, the Mac App Store would look very similar to the iOS App Store.
